Malaga is a cultural and cosmopolitan city, where many local and traditional festivals are celebrated throughout the year, which you can discover together with its gastronomic culture.

Here are the main events of the year.

Easter week

It has a variable date depending on Lent, being celebrated between the months of March and April. Although it has nothing to do with a Fair, Holy Week in Malaga is considered one of the most important in Spain, and is one of the most important events of the year in the city, attracting thousands of the faithful and visitors every year.

During these days the streets are filled with saetas, liturgical activities, incense and aromas. Full of contrasts, moving us from spiritual retreat to jubilation. During this week there is hustle and bustle, joy and revelry until late at night.

Traditionally the Malaga Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, beginning with the first procession called “La Pollínica” and ending with “El Resucitado”. There are many processions every day in the centre of Malaga, except on Saturday, when there are no processions.

Without a doubt, it is worth immersing yourself, at least once in your life, in this experience.

Festivity of the Virgen del Carmen

On July 16th this seafaring procession in honour of the patron saint of fishermen is celebrated all along the Costa del Sol.

Adorned with beautiful flowers, the Virgin is carried in procession through the streets of the city, arriving at the sea, where she is paraded in a boat.

There are many municipalities in Malaga where you can enjoy this festival, full of colour and joy, seafaring flavour and celebration.

Malaga Fair

The Malaga Fair, in the month of August, is the most popular traditional festival, being welcomed every year with great joy by thousands of locals. Crowds of visitors from outside and inside the city, enjoy lots of music, dance, folklore and cold Cartojal to combat the high temperatures of the Malaga summer. In fact, together with the Seville fair, it is the most important fair in Andalusia, attracting more than a million visitors every year.

During the day, it takes place in the streets of the historic centre and then moves at night to the fairgrounds, Cortijo de Torres, where it can be enjoyed until dawn.

The fair begins on Friday night with a street crier on the Malagueta Beach where we are. Thousands of people flock to Malaga’s most famous beach to hear a renowned artist give a proclamation and watch the fireworks that open the city’s big week.

From then on, you have a whole week ahead of you to enjoy yourself to the fullest and live an unforgettable experience, immersing yourself in the city’s most popular festival, with concerts, live music in the streets and its popular verdiales dances.

Christmas illumination at Larios Street

At the end of November, one of the most eagerly awaited events in the city takes place for both locals and visitors, the official switching on of the Christmas lights on the famous Marqués de Larios Street.

During these dates, this famous and historic street takes on a unique and special colour. The lights dance to the sound of music forming a spectacle that is considered among the best in Spain.

The lights have a long timetable so that everyone who visits the city has the opportunity to see them.

During these dates, you can also visit more than 80 streets decorated with Christmas lights in the city, as well as the street markets, where you can buy all kinds of handicrafts for these dates and enjoy the nativity scenes that fill the city.
